As it turns out, this week’s Democratic Primary Debate that aired on NBC News was the most watched ever, Media Bistro reported.

The ninth debate featured for the first time former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who took a beating from other candidates accusing the billionaire of using his money to buy the nomination.

The ratings were record breaking, with 19.7 million total viewers and 5.3 million adults in ages 25-54 tuning in to NBC and MSNBC, according to the Huffington Post.

Is the hint of controversy what gets viewers motivated to watch?
